About the Author

Ernest H. Shepard was born in 1879 in London. His father was an architect and his mother who died when he was ten years old was the daughter of a notable watercolorist. It was she who first encouraged young Ernest to paint and draw. Travers Mary Poppins books.When World War I broke out, Shepard served in France, Belgium, and Italy, attaining the rank of Major. On his return to England, he continued with his art. He became a regular contributor to Punch, the classic British humor magazine, where he met A. A. Milne, a man who was to be instrumental to his career. Shepard was elected to the editorial board of Punch, and shortly thereafter, he agreed to do the illustrations for Milne's first book of verse, When We Were Very Young.The illustrations that Shepard created for all four of the Pooh books received worldwide acclaim. For the next thirty years, he continued to illustrate books for both adults and children. In 1973, for the first time, he added color to his drawings for Winnie-the-Pooh. This Pooh book has an old fashioned look to it which makes it even more special. Each page introduces a different color. Its short and to the point so little ones don't loose interest. I bought for my grand-baby, can't wait to read this to her. I know she will love it! What a great way to teach colors through Pooh and his friends. What child doesn't love Pooh?

Love it! The pictures are very vintage but the colors are still vibrant enough for my son to point out. He learned his colors on this book and still loves it! He's not even two years old yet. If it can keep his attention, I think it'll do it for anybody!

Love the illustrations. Short and to the point so the youngest readers won't get ants in their pants sitting still for too long.

I am brand new to Blender and have tried some of the YouTube videos for absolute beginners. Most go too quickly and do not explain the overall thinking of the layout of the Blender GUI and commands. Also, with the videos, it was easy to forget the important Blender commands. This book gives you more of a context of why commands are where they are and what they do, making it all easier to remember and get around. You will need to go out of your way to do memorization of the plethora of important, frequently needed Blender commands, but Hess specifically highlights commands that you will want to go out of your way to memorize. I added those commands on flash cards on Study Blue so I could practice memorizing them. This has worked out well.I was originally concerned that following the Blender instructions in the book would be difficult because it was a book, not a video where you can see exactly what they are doing. But for some reason this is not a problem with this book.By following the instructions in the book, you really feel like you made progress and got something done. And while doing a real project, you have gained understanding to do your own beginning projects. Roland Hess has a done a wonderful job making Blender more accessible to people who want to use this software.Excellent book.

First, a correction: The version used is not 2.6 but 2.53, at the latest; eight versions before 2.6. Does this invalidate the book? Not really. The changes are minor, but there are differences. Point being, the author/publisher should've come clean about which version was really being used.That aside, you'll still get a lot out of this book. I found the author's writing style quite engaging.

I struggled for months on YouTube trying to learn my way around in Blender.Then I finally broke down and bought a book, and I chose this one. I can only say I wish I had done it sooner. I still spend a lot of time on You Tube, bc there is a lot of great stuff out there. You can learn a lot from tutorials, but what they don't do is take you in logical steps from the beginning, and you tend to learn a lot of stuff by accident, and you can miss some basic stuff that would make your life easier if someone had just told you.This book takes you through creating a scene with a character in it, and animating it. It covers texturing and lighting as well, so you learn the basics of all that Blender can do, and you have created something by the end. It is a practical approach, where you learn by doing. Most important for me was that It gave me a good grounding in how the interface works. I could barely make anything usable until I got through the first four chapters in this book. Then suddenly, I was able make stuff. I still haven't gotten much past chapter 4, as I keep going off in other directions. But it freed me up to be able to do what I needed to do at the time. This book will probably last me a long time. I still spend most of my time in Blender fiddling with sculpt maps, but as Mesh becomes more important, I am beginning to get my feet wet in modeling, and I find I'm getting curious about the animation part.Have a care when you order books on Blender on Amazon. They are not always displayed with the right version number.

Blender Foundations: The Essential Guide to Learning Blender 2.6 by Roland Hess is one book I purchased nearly 2 years ago, started and never finished reading. Finally I decided to go back and finish it, as it’s been bugging me for a while. I have to say, this is a fine piece of text. It really takes you from knowing nothing about the software, to feeling somewhat knowledgeable on the topic.The book is not especially long at around 400 pages, but there is a good amount of information between the covers. It goes over the basics of modeling with Blender, all the important hot-keys, basic navigation, and all that. The scene you create is not super fancy, but includes a lot of good stuff: handling different materials, lighting and shadowing, glass rendering, cloth and soft-body physics, character animation, etc. Some of the basic items are created from scratch (like a table and chair) however the character model is given to you later in the book. Still not maybe *everything* you could possibly know about Blender, but it does say “Foundation” and “Essential” in the title, and I feel it lives up to the name.In terms of Blender itself, after reading the book and going through many of the exercises, I have a new-found respect for the software. Initially I expected it to be a cheap (well, free) version of Max or Maya, but I think it can stand on it’s own. While I mostly learned Maya in school, it never felt quite natural to me and I always seemed to favor 3DS Max. Since spending more time working with Blender and learning the hot-keys it seems like a really capable package. It might even like it better then the big guys. Sure, it may not have all the bells and whistles of something like Maya, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t accomplish some amazing things with the program. And, of course, it’s free and open-source which counts for a lot.Overall I liked the book and the author’s writing style and think it’s a great introduction to a powerful piece of software.

On the plus side, the book starts off strong: it provides the reader with a step-by-step guide to drawing the classic manga eyes. If the book had continued with this step-by-step approach, it would have been a very useful guide. Unfortunately, the book quickly becomes much less step-by-step.To be specific, most of the lessons involve showing the reader the starting point and, at most, an intermediate stage followed by the final (but not colored) stage. For example, the very brief section on how to draw a dragon shows the framework sketch, an intermediate stage and then the final stage with only very limited text describing what to do.The book also does not cover coloring (all drawing are black and white), scenery, and props-which makes it rather less than an ultimate tutorial.While I did learn to draw a decent eye, that was about it-the rest of the lessons were not step-by-step enough.

The pictures were quite small for a drawing guide. The author had personal methods of sketching that were good, but despite mentioning other methods, did not bother to explain them. The assumption is that the reader has some familiarity with other writing guides and that is not necessarily true for people looking to draw anime. There is very little text or instruction and with the small size of the , artwork on the Kindle screen, it is not as h helpful as it could be.Is it a manga drawing book? Yes. Does it earn the "ultimate" that is in its title? Definitely not. It is a decent secondary or tertiary resource, but this book will not be your #1 go-to guide.

I bought this book for my daughter (11) who loves manga and anime, and she wanted to learn how to draw manga characters. She likes the detailed instructions, and how the author approaches the drawing of characters. However, she didn't like that the characters are semi-realistic and not as cartoonish as her favorite manga characters are. She learned a lot on how to draw eyes, and she could develop it further to draw overly enlarged manga eye expressions. In this book, it is easier to follow how to draw bodies comparing to other manga drawing books.

this was a very good book to teach you how to draw. it may not, however, fully demonstrate the emotions, accessories, and lighting and coloring techniques commonly used in anime. this should not be the sole book of info if you really want to professionally draw anime. but is still to me a spectacular book that demonstrates all the details. bravo, MobiPoki, for a good book! please make another one about lighting and coloring techniques soon! or if you already have, please inform me what it is.

This book isn't as bad as the other reviews say it is. It's a very useful book for the absolute basics and contains all the information you will need to begin drawing at a lower price than your standard 'How to Draw Manga' books. Most of it is step by step basics such as eyes, heads, bodies, clothing folds etc and also contains tips on drawing chibis. The section on anatomy is a little vague and the book relies heavily on imagery rather than descriptions so if you're the type of person that questions a lot of techniques and want answers about why something should be done a particular way then this isn't for you.Honestly I'd say this is a better book for the absolute beginner than the Mark Crilley or Manga University books and is a much cheaper option. I personally didn't learn anything new though.

I like the very simple instructions, the only thing is that digital version when the author goes in to the detail the page looks very small so you have to enlarge it. Aside from that I think is a very nice how to book.

I got this book for my son, whom loves to draw. He has expressed to me that this book is easy to follow. Not only that, his artwork looks like it was done by a professional.

It considers itself a never ending continuation of God's message to us. That past faiths were given to specific peoples at specific times of history and given in a way that most (not all) people could accept and understand. That God will continue to give humanity guidance in the future. People of the Bahá'í Faith study Bahá'í teachings as well a most all past teachings. Since I never even heard of it, and their beliefs sounded compelling, I picked up this book to find out more about this little known faith. While I did not convert my faith; I found the book did a great job of providing a great, non-biased, overview of the faith. I learned about the roots of the faith, what their main beliefs are, and how they practice them. I found this book fascinating and this 'new' faith very interesting. Highly recommended for those that want to find out more about the Bahai faith.

I am enjoying both the text version and the audio version of this book. The author has done a wonderful job of explaining the history, the beliefs, the practices, the goals and aims, the unique features, the teachings, the vision, and the community life of the Baha'i Faith. Very readable and understandable, accurate, even inspiring! Highly recommended for seekers of truth and for Baha'is who love to continue learning about their Faith.

Mr. Bowers clearly lays out the fundamentals of the Baha'i Faith. The Baha'i Faith is a religion whose primary function is to teach mankind to love all members of the human family as their own nuclear family. We are all created equal, all created noble in the eyes of God. Our job as global citizens is to work for the betterment of the whole human family giving everyone the opportunity to participate in its advancement. Baha'u'llah promises that by following his teachings, we will create 'heaven on earth'.

This is a very good introduction to the Baha'i faith. I was not at all familiar with the Baha'i's. I am a student (sort of) of religion and have always wanted to understand what the other faiths and traditions have to say, preferably by reading their main religious text (read as bible), but when you've never heard of a faith you don't know where to look. So, I saw this on Amazon and it was touted as an intro to the Baha'i faith. It is. It gives you the basics, basically the Baha'i 101 version, of the faith, as well as the names of the major religious texts so you can buy them and read the teachings as written.Is it preachy as Publishers Weekly states? I agree with one of the other reviewers on this. No it is not. He quotes from "scripture" as necessary to explain his point. This is a good primer to decide whether or not you want to delve deeper and understand more about the Baha'i faith.

This is a wonderful book for a beginner in the studying the Baha'i Faith. It breaks down the basic beginnings of the Faith and the laws and customs. A person who has been in the Faith for a long time, a new believer, or a seeker can equally find value in the information from this book.

I am a Baha'i of many years. I think this book is a good intro to the history of the Baha'i Faith. It's easy to read and includes all of the major historical points. I like that the author includes quotes from non-Baha'i figures of that time period. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about the beginning of the Baha'i Faith as an introduction. There are other books that go into more detail for anyone who would like to study Baha'i history in more depth. "God Passes By" by Shoghi Effendi would be a good next book for a more serious study.

This is a great book. As technical as a smart guy would want. So many books dont go in depth but this author does and im grateful for the real knowledge i gained from reading it. Recommend highly.

I was given this book to review by the YDSA, being a practising yacht surveyor in Britain. I found it to be a very poor book, written by somebody who, so far as can be seen, is not a marine surveyor but a lecturer in marine ventilation. A colleague who also reviewed the book agreed.It would be of no help, and could be misleading.

The theory behind the book is good and, honestly, Mr. McDonald does a much better SELLING the book than actually following through. He relies heavily on using Google Adwords however his references to aspects of Adwords do not match the Google Adwords Dashboard thus making entire sections of the book unusable. In addition, he references various worksheets and documents you are to use in conjunction with the book. You are supposed to be able to access these via going to his website and entering a code contained in the book. I went through the process a couple times and surprise, surprise! No documents! Just links to additional paid training, consulting, etc! Yet these documents (worksheets) are apparently an important aspect of the SEO process he lays out. So, the book is really a lead-in to purchase other products the author is selling. I gave it two stars rather than one because there are a few tidbits of info in the book which can be taken independently. The guy does seem to know what he's talking about. It's just too bad he didn't deliver on the book rather than use it as a "sales brochure" for his other products.

I ordered SEO Fitness Workbook 3 days ago.I also purchased the digital version which I got immediately. On the day I finished the digital version, the hard copy arrived. This book was written very well for people like me, a neophyte. Jason obviously understands the perplexing concepts of SEO and he breaks it down to the level of a 6th grader. I have many books on the subject and most of them left me with more questions that had no answers. Aside from a well written book, Dr. McDonald makes himself available to answer questions. I emailed him a question late at night and got my answer (clearly explained) within an hour! I thought to myself,"was he waiting for me to ask a question?" Look! If you are searching for the bible of SEO, Here It Is

First things first -- I've read a LOT on SEO. Dr. McDonald's in't the first, but it may be the last -- well, until he updates in next year and publishes a fresh new version for us. Some advice: 1) read the reviews; 2) don't judge the book by it's cover (I come from a design background, so I look at things from that perspective); 3) read the book; 4) do what he says; 5) enjoy the results. Dr. McDonald does a couple things very well, with the most obvious one being -- he puts together useful, actionable information on SEO in a concise and straight forward package. He addresses reality, myths, and all other manner of important details you can take to the bank -- literally, if you do what you're told. Because as he puts it, SEO leads to ranking, ranking leads to leads, and leads lead to sales. Okay, he was way more articulate than I am, but you get the point. Enjoy.

I purchased this book with the other one of George Vosselman in 2011. Both are the great books and are still the cutting edge of today.

It is enjoyable to read, but a lot of the personal experiences presented here are outdated. They started their Instagram accounts right when it first launched, and it's no longer possible to break out of the shell in the same ways they did, due to changes Instagram has made to the algorithm. I bought this book a few weeks ago, but since then Instagram has also added a huge amount of annoying ads. I deleted my Facebook long ago and I'm sad to say Instagram has me leaning that way now, too. That said, this is a great book of you'd like to see some amazing people to follow. Fun to dink around with and pass the time.

The title is somewhat disingenuous. The book is a quick read (around 100 pages I think) and it's mainly statements and pictures from some accounts who've made it big.The two things they all had in common? Early adopters of Instagram, and they all had some sort of "get lucky" moment/photo. They were all featured on the Instagram blog, became a featured user of Instagram or had a photo go viral from Instagram. There's nothing really helpful here except for the help from Instagram itself which are grey and black pages of information and only maybe 10 pages of the book in total.It's probably a good coffee table book or something to start conversation about, but no real "information" here.

It was interesting. I wish it had had more solid, practical tips, though.

This was more of a photography 101 book than how to become an Instagram influence guide. I did find one tip helpful: straighten out your pictures! People like symmetry. I probably should have known that already.

Love all of Henry Carroll's photography books. This book is very well written and provides lots of tips and examples. The pictures are as always beautiful.

It was a good to read. A lot of the pictures are creative and points were made, but it isn’t as revelant anyone.

An excellent resource with many helpful tips. I like that each tip is short and sweet--no long winded discussions! Plus, the accompanying photos perfectly illustrate the ideas so there are no misconceptions.

This is a very practical book that delivers what it promises--detailed descriptions and directions to 60 places in Madison and vicinity suitable for walkers and hikers, of varying degrees of difficulty. Have already discovered several places not far from where I live, parks and natural areas with beautiful views and interesting flora and fauna--and hardly anyone there, even on a gorgeous late summer day! If you're looking for motivation to do more walking, and chill out in nature, this book will help. The only defect is the grainy black and white photos of the hiking areas, that give a very feeble idea of what they're like--but the verbal descriptions are accurate, and if the book had gorgeous color photos it would cost twice as much, so I didn't want to take a star away for that reason.

I'm using this book all the time this fall and hope to walk at least 50% of the hikes.

Got this for my dad for Christmas as he moved to Madison recently. He loves it!

The street maps are very good and each map identifies key places in the neighborhood.Each neighborhood map has a listing next to the map tells you about neighborhood Banks, Car Washes, Gas Sations, Hospitals, Landmarks, Libraries, Parking, Pharmacies, Pizza places, Post Offices, Schools, Supermarkets, Coffee Shops, Gyms, Hardware Stores, Liquor Stores, Nightlife Spots, Pet Shops, Restaurants, Shopping Locations and Video Rental Stores - but, of course, only if the neighborhood has, say, a bank in it.I have two minor complaints about this volume. The first is that I wish the North/South/East/West location markers ("3200W," "4000N") were more bolded and more frequent. Second, I would love to have an overall index of places so that, for example, if I could not remember which neighborhood Hopleaf is in, I could go to the general index and locate its map reference.But I'm just whining. It's a very well organized, well informed, and surprisingly complete piece of work for a list price of $16.95.By the way - be sure you're buying the most recent version, since it's published each year. If you buy one of the older ones, places like Millennium Park won't be in it. And, as the book itself points out, "The Chicago restaurant scene has exploded in recent years. . . .Lately it seems that trendy new hotspots are popping up by the minute." This, of course, cuts both ways, and the book is careful to point out some of what's closed and gone as well as what's new and hot; but the moral here is that last year's book might be very much out of date.Finally, while this book on its own will get you where you need to go, I would recommend, if you need something to supplement it, that you get the latest Zagat for Chicago.

When i lived in Chicago, i found myself resorting to this book for history, things to do, etc. Now it is just used as a coffee table book but people seem interested to look at it!

As a house-hunter in Chicago, this was a very useful guide for figuring out how far it was to the grocery store & train station from various houses. It even has nice maps of the commuter train system extending out to the western suburbs, down to Indiana, and up to Wisconsin. It's also good for orienting yourself before visiting friends in an unfamiliar neighborhood when traveling by public transit.The book's major failing is that it doesn't cover the west and south neighborhoods in the City even though it covers the suburbs of Oak Park and Evanston. (Nothing in the book is further out than about 3200 west or 63rd street to the south, and it cuts out almost everything found to the southwest of a diagonal line running from the south edge of Logan Square to the west edge of Washington Park.) Maybe the creators of the book thought that the demographic that would be buying the book wouldn't be interested in reading about Beverly or Edison Park. Nevertheless, I recommend the book.

This guide is honestly, pretty useless. Any Tom, Dick or Harry knows about Wrigleyville, Boystown, and well, the rest of Lakeview. Anyone can tell you that the heart of Lincoln Park is, well, Lincoln Avenue. But, why, for the life of me, can't I find much on Bridgeport? Mayor Daley liked it well enough, but, hey, The NFT guys can't be bothered with the facts. Where's anything west of Western? I guess Humboldt Park and Albany Park aren't worth the time. Which is too bad, because it completely leaves out mention of some of the best bars and music clubs in the city, not to mention, some of the easiest to navigate streets. If you're a tourist looking for lowest common denominator style travel books, then yes, I guess the NFT is a little better than average. But when I saw how useless this thing was when a freshly moved in friend bought one, I knew that this is for tourists...and tourists only. You're better off with the Irreverent Guide. Heck, they might actually list an address for The Empty Bottle...

I work for an Apartment Management & Rental Service in Chicago & I HIGHLY reccommend this book for anyone who is (or maybe just thinking about) moving here! Everything from Transit (the trains can stump newcomers) to the local grocery to yummy eateries & trendy shopping boutiques are listed in clear, accurate, easy-to-read & follow maps. The Maps are divided into nieghborhhods with concise discriptions (& sometimes apt criticism) that can help you find a place to live... or just a place to hang out this weekend. Everyone who's bought one has been grateful for it's usefulness... and never has to ask where the nearest movie theater (or rental store) is!
