Kenneth Bowers did an excellent job of highlighting the most major aspects of the Bahá'à Faith. The Bahá'à Faith is not here to discard the past faiths but to build upon them, to join humanity together in peace is what I got out of the book. It can be difficult to figure out but the book clarifies that even though the Bahá'à Faith is an independent religion and not a sect of another other faith. It considers itself a never ending continuation of God's message to us. That past faiths were given to specific peoples at specific times of history and given in a way that most (not all) people could accept and understand. That God will continue to give humanity guidance in the future. People of the Bahá'à Faith study Bahá'à teachings as well a most all past teachings. A close friend of mine in graduate school told me that he followed the Bahai faith and that most of his family followed it as well. Since I never even heard of it, and their beliefs sounded compelling, I picked up this book to find out more about this little known faith. While I did not convert my faith; I found the book did a great job of providing a great, non-biased, overview of the faith. I learned about the roots of the faith, what their main beliefs are, and how they practice them. I found this book fascinating and this 'new' faith very interesting. Highly recommended for those that want to find out more about the Bahai faith.
I am enjoying both the text version and the audio version of this book. The author has done a wonderful job of explaining the history, the beliefs, the practices, the goals and aims, the unique features, the teachings, the vision, and the community life of the Baha'i Faith. Very readable and understandable, accurate, even inspiring! Highly recommended for seekers of truth and for Baha'is who love to continue learning about their Faith.
Mr. Bowers clearly lays out the fundamentals of the Baha'i Faith. The Baha'i Faith is a religion whose primary function is to teach mankind to love all members of the human family as their own nuclear family. We are all created equal, all created noble in the eyes of God. Our job as global citizens is to work for the betterment of the whole human family giving everyone the opportunity to participate in its advancement. Baha'u'llah promises that by following his teachings, we will create 'heaven on earth'.
This is a very good introduction to the Baha'i faith. I was not at all familiar with the Baha'i's. I am a student (sort of) of religion and have always wanted to understand what the other faiths and traditions have to say, preferably by reading their main religious text (read as bible), but when you've never heard of a faith you don't know where to look. So, I saw this on Amazon and it was touted as an intro to the Baha'i faith. It is. It gives you the basics, basically the Baha'i 101 version, of the faith, as well as the names of the major religious texts so you can buy them and read the teachings as written.Is it preachy as Publishers Weekly states? I agree with one of the other reviewers on this. No it is not. He quotes from "scripture" as necessary to explain his point. This is a good primer to decide whether or not you want to delve deeper and understand more about the Baha'i faith.
This is a wonderful book for a beginner in the studying the Baha'i Faith. It breaks down the basic beginnings of the Faith and the laws and customs. A person who has been in the Faith for a long time, a new believer, or a seeker can equally find value in the information from this book.
I am a Baha'i of many years. I think this book is a good intro to the history of the Baha'i Faith. It's easy to read and includes all of the major historical points. I like that the author includes quotes from non-Baha'i figures of that time period. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about the beginning of the Baha'i Faith as an introduction. There are other books that go into more detail for anyone who would like to study Baha'i history in more depth. "God Passes By" by Shoghi Effendi would be a good next book for a more serious study.
This should be a foundation book in your Baha'i library. It is a comprehensive introduction to Baha'i history and practices.
