A little hard to follow with all the name dropping, this book is a good history of one of Mormonism's most colorful characters. Emma Smith may be the only other person in Church History about whom there are more contradictions and questions than Porter Rockwell. Some of the text is outdated as new information has become available, most notably the introduction, but overall it's a good read. It's a pretty balanced portrayal of Rockwell as a human being with weaknesses and peculiarities, but extraordinarily good characteristics as well. I wish there were more information about him "stealing" that woman in Nauvoo. Some of the footnotes were unclear about references, but most were very good. Be sure to read them as you go along. My favorite part was when Rockwell led the first raid on the Federal Army which seemed like a huge success but ended with the loss of all the horses of the raiding party due to a simple bugle blast. My father and I had a good laugh about that. Rockwell is the kind of fella I would have liked to know. Despite the book's flaws and age, it's still worth your time to read.
This is the second book I've read about this rather colorful figure.I think the readability of this book exceeds that of the first.
Orrin Porter Rockwell (OPR) was a young friend of the Prophet Joseph Smith, first prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) who organized the LDS church in 1830. OPR was mild-mannered and soft-spoken until, living in Missouri, he witnessed the havoc wreaked upon the Saints by their non-Saint neighbors. The Saints migrated to the swampy town of Commere, IL. The Saints filled the swamp and renamed the new town Nauvoo. OPR lagged behind the body of the Saints who founded Nauvoo, stayed in Missouri, and shot--but did not kill--the Lieutenant Governor Boggs. He was imprisoned in Missouri for about a year. He was tried but could not be convicted for lack of tangible evidence. He was kept in jail, but escaped and traveled to Nauvoo to rejoin the Saints in Nauvoo. This book describes his role as bodyguard to Smith, then Brigham Young. It tells of his adventures as the LDS lawman in the settlement of Utah by the Saints. He was fearless and killed many criminals. He could interact with and was respected by the local Indians. He was known for his liquor drinking, but Brigham Young would go nowhere in Utah without him, drunk or not. Again, this book is a fascinating biography of OPR, the settlement of Utah, and the early history of the Saints. Readers will learn much.
There is a lot of controversy about the life of Porter Rockwell and this book does not do as well in dispelling that as it could. This book gives more weight to spurious accounts, urban legends and extremely biased sources than I think is good. It is an interesting read still, but I think the author gave to much weight to sources of little merit.
After reading Porter Rockwell Biography I was of course curious what this book would say about my personal hero Orrin Porter Rockwell. I felt like the author wrote this book from a completely non-bias point of view despite being a member of the Mormon church. I learned some new things about this highly controversial member of the old west!
