About the Author

Jen Hatmaker and her family live in Austin, Texas, where the city motto is “Keep Austin Weird.” Jen’s eight previous books include Interrupted and A Modern Girl’s Guide to Bible Study. She and her husband planted Austin New Church in an economically and ethnically diverse, socially unique, urban area of the city in 2008. They’ve seen their world turned upside down as they’ve considered what it means to ask God how to live and not just what to do. Together with her husband and their five children, they all keep Austin weird and seek to glorify God as they do.

I have been following Jen Hatmaker's blog for quite a while now, and I've read a couple of her books. This one is, by far, the one that has rocked my world the most! Knowing that we have excess, and it causes stress, and now having an idea of what to do about it and how to bless others has been revolutionary. There isn't one bad or least favorite chapter in this book, but I would have to say that the last chapter, the one on prayer, has challenged me the most in my Christian walk. Thank you for another excellent book, and thank you for pointing us, your readers, to the Lord!

In the opening of Seven, Jen writes about the genesis for this experiment, how she realized that even though she and her husband Brandon had left the large church they were serving at in Austin to start Austin New Church with the simple mantra: "Love your neighbor, serve your city," she began to realize that she had never intentionally surrendered the comforts of her life. When she considered the amounts of excess in her life, she identified some areas we have too much of in our culture: food, clothes, possessions, media, waste, spending, stress. Then she decided to see what would happen if she intentionally fasted from the excess: Seven months, seven areas, reduced to seven simple choices. I'm embarking on a journey of less. It's time to purge the junk and pare down to what is necessary. Seven will be an exercise in simplicity with one goal: to create space for the Kingdom of God to break through. What follows is an INCREDIBLE read, my friends. Really, truly incredible. One of the things I treasure the most about Jen's writing is that she is 1) seriously hilarious and 2) unflinchingly honest. Although the topic practically begs for it, there is not one trace of self-righteousness to be found. That's the truth. She records how the experiment unfolds, confessing the times she breaks the rules and sharing how irritable her family got at various points as they were dragged along in her crazy. The topics she covers include: real food, spending less (or nothing!) on clothing, creation care, consumerism, Sabbath rest and so much more. She talks about how most of us, we cry over the orphan crisis and we feel sick over child trafficking. We cringe at how much we spend on birthday parties, knowing there are children starving everywhere. We read Shane Claiborne and feel depressed for days. We know we are living the MORE MORE MORE life our culture offers, and we feel so much tension about what to do about it.Jen writes: We're so conditioned to being the problem that we've forgotten that we are actually the answer. God is not angry at you; how could he possibly be? You're his daughter, his son, you're on the team. Don't imagine he is sitting us all down for a lecture. Rather, he's staging a rally, gathering the troops. The church is rising like a phoenix right now, collecting speed and strength and power.THIS is the life-giving, hope-bringing, love-empowering message of Seven. It is NOT a lecture. You will not walk away from it feeling like crap. You will be inspired. If nothing else, you'll be entertained.

I actually liked this book quite a bit at first, but around the fifth section of this book, I had hit my “Jen Hatmaker Limit.” My wife loves this book so much, so I knew I should read it. It really impacted her spiritual life, and after reading this book, she spent a year doing 50 things that would make the world a better place. This author is funny, but in small portions. I wouldn’t want to read this book again, but I can’t say that I don’t recommend it. There are some people that this book would be an awesome fit for.In this book about Hatmaker’s experimental mutiny against excess, the author shares her journal entries from seven months of trying to change her life to see the world in a different way. She established different rules for different categories, and then spent a month implementing hard changes in her life in order to stop the excess in her and her family’s life. Here are the categories for each of the seven months that wrote about:-Month One: Food-Month Two: Clothes-Month Three: Possessions-Month Four: Media-Month Five: Waste-Month Six: Spending-Month Seven: StressFinal rating = 2.5 stars

This book will make you re-think what is important. Even if you don’t think you have too much ‘stuff’ this book will cause you to rethink priorities. This is not a ‘get rid of your clutter’ book. This is a release your mind from the daily ‘keeping up’ Stress we place on ourselves. Love this

Wow! What an excellent book! While I have not tried the "7" experiment myself, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Jen Hatmaker's experience! She is a gifted, funny, articulate writer who obviously loves God!

This book changed my life. After reading it and taking time to contemplate the lessons learned, I bought the study guide. Along with a friend, we did our own version of 7. It was powerful. Every year we repeat a version of 7. I encourage you to give it a try. Even if you don't do every chapter, it is well worth the effort!

Jen Hatmaker was excellent in this book. I lover her thoughts, personal insights, and grit honesty through out the book. This book has left we wanting to challenge myself to live a more Christ centered life, not just spiritually, but practically in real life. Jen really brings home the message of ministering to the poor, being good stewards of the earth, and avoiding the pitfalls of excess.Great read for any Christian, regardless of denomination. As a conservative, cradle, Irish Catholic, I still really enjoyed this book and found it spiritually sounds and very pertinent to the times we live. My one regret is getting the kindle edition. This book probably works best in hard copy so you can easily go back and reference things. I'm thinking of getting another copy just for that reason.Jen- I hope you so read this review (as you admitted you sometimes do). Just loved you!
