I was just starting out with Mathematica and was not getting very far with the online videos offered by Wolfram and independents. This is the book that really got me going. There are other books but they are fairly expensive. This book covers all the basics very efficiently. The criticism made by other reviewers that it is out of date is in my opinion overstated. Yes the book was written for Mathematica 7, and Mathematica 10 just came out. Yes there are a few things that work a little differently but 99% of the material is unchangedThis book alone will get you to an intermediate skill level and will suffice for many. However if u want to become a power user you will have to go beyond this book. Nevertheless, for the beginner it is the right starting point.
this is an excellent book. The author covers all the basic topics. I recommend it for both the beginner and the moderate level user. Someone who is into very advanced Mathematica topics or who is interested in Mathematica 10 may want to get a more advanced text. I purchased two, one for work and another for reading at home. Mathematica was designed to be easy but is really not that easy to learn unfortunately. Matlab seems to be much easier but the symbolic math features are much better with Wolfram Alpha on the web. So overall Mathematica has a few problems but the book does a good job trying sort all of those issues out. I would recommend it to other users.
So far this is the best book I have seen for using Mathemematica. It is much better than I expected it would be given its very reasonable price point. It's not like reading a novel and it's better than reading a dry technical manual. It's a near perfect blend of complete sentences (without undefined jargon) and what is expected from a technical book. I definitely recommend this book for its ease with helping one learn Mathematica.
I am learning Mathematica and have four books about it. All are excellent. However, this one is by far the most concise & useful. You learn things quick with it. It may not be as intertaining and engaging as others, but neither is it tedious and boring. If I could have only one reference/tutorial this would be it. I recommend it highly.
I agree, this book should be included with Mathematica. It's concise, to the point. Builds topics in logical steps with multiple examples and worked through problems.Most of the stuff that applies works in later versions of Mathematica but it's a simple matter within Mathematica to find out how the dated procedures can be done in the newer versions. I have the latest version and have no problem using this book.The price alone makes it well worth it. If you want to get started quickly and progress rapidly you definitely should buy this book!
Schaum is great, put these into Jupyter notebooks backed by elastic compute and THEN you're talking.
This book is very helpfull if you have never used Mathematica. However, it is very disorganized and it does not go into very deep explinations about the program. It uses new commands before it has introduced them, which leads to plenty of confusion. Other than that, it is a good book for all lower level mathemathics courses.
At this price, you can't go wrong. All of the problems have full answers. (This is different from other Schaum's series books I have used where many of the problems only have shortened, "final" answers.) A criticism we can give this book is that it does not go very deep into the most sophisticated and novel aspects of the Mathematica language. Consider the book "Programming with Mathematica, An Introduction" by Paul Wellin, or "Mathematica Cookbook" by Sal Mangano if you are interested in using more of the power of this exceptional software.
