About the Author
Ernest H. Shepard was born in 1879 in London. His father was an architect and his mother who died when he was ten years old was the daughter of a notable watercolorist. It was she who first encouraged young Ernest to paint and draw. Art became Ernest's passion, and after attending Heatherly's Art School and the Royal Acadamy Schools, Shepard supported himself by drawing for the illustrated papers and by illustrating books.In 1903, Shepard married Florence Chaplin. Florence was a mural painter and fellow student at the Academy. The Shepards had two children: Graham, who was killed in World War II, and Mary, who later illustrated Mary L. Travers Mary Poppins books.When World War I broke out, Shepard served in France, Belgium, and Italy, attaining the rank of Major. On his return to England, he continued with his art. He became a regular contributor to Punch, the classic British humor magazine, where he met A. A. Milne, a man who was to be instrumental to his career. Shepard was elected to the editorial board of Punch, and shortly thereafter, he agreed to do the illustrations for Milne's first book of verse, When We Were Very Young.The illustrations that Shepard created for all four of the Pooh books received worldwide acclaim. For the next thirty years, he continued to illustrate books for both adults and children. In 1973, for the first time, he added color to his drawings for Winnie-the-Pooh. Shepard ultimately donated several hundred drawings to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.Ernest H. This Pooh book has an old fashioned look to it which makes it even more special. Each page introduces a different color. Its short and to the point so little ones don't loose interest. I bought for my grand-baby, can't wait to read this to her. I know she will love it! What a great way to teach colors through Pooh and his friends. What child doesn't love Pooh?
Love it! The pictures are very vintage but the colors are still vibrant enough for my son to point out. He learned his colors on this book and still loves it! He's not even two years old yet. If it can keep his attention, I think it'll do it for anybody!
Love the illustrations. Short and to the point so the youngest readers won't get ants in their pants sitting still for too long.

I am brand new to Blender and have tried some of the YouTube videos for absolute beginners. Most go too quickly and do not explain the overall thinking of the layout of the Blender GUI and commands. Also, with the videos, it was easy to forget the important Blender commands. This book gives you more of a context of why commands are where they are and what they do, making it all easier to remember and get around. You will need to go out of your way to do memorization of the plethora of important, frequently needed Blender commands, but Hess specifically highlights commands that you will want to go out of your way to memorize. I added those commands on flash cards on Study Blue so I could practice memorizing them. This has worked out well.I was originally concerned that following the Blender instructions in the book would be difficult because it was a book, not a video where you can see exactly what they are doing. But for some reason this is not a problem with this book.By following the instructions in the book, you really feel like you made progress and got something done. And while doing a real project, you have gained understanding to do your own beginning projects. Roland Hess has a done a wonderful job making Blender more accessible to people who want to use this software.Excellent book.
First, a correction: The version used is not 2.6 but 2.53, at the latest; eight versions before 2.6. Does this invalidate the book? Not really. The changes are minor, but there are differences. Point being, the author/publisher should've come clean about which version was really being used.That aside, you'll still get a lot out of this book. I found the author's writing style quite engaging.
I struggled for months on YouTube trying to learn my way around in Blender.Then I finally broke down and bought a book, and I chose this one. I can only say I wish I had done it sooner. I still spend a lot of time on You Tube, bc there is a lot of great stuff out there. You can learn a lot from tutorials, but what they don't do is take you in logical steps from the beginning, and you tend to learn a lot of stuff by accident, and you can miss some basic stuff that would make your life easier if someone had just told you.This book takes you through creating a scene with a character in it, and animating it. It covers texturing and lighting as well, so you learn the basics of all that Blender can do, and you have created something by the end. It is a practical approach, where you learn by doing. Most important for me was that It gave me a good grounding in how the interface works. I could barely make anything usable until I got through the first four chapters in this book. Then suddenly, I was able make stuff. I still haven't gotten much past chapter 4, as I keep going off in other directions. But it freed me up to be able to do what I needed to do at the time. This book will probably last me a long time. I still spend most of my time in Blender fiddling with sculpt maps, but as Mesh becomes more important, I am beginning to get my feet wet in modeling, and I find I'm getting curious about the animation part.Have a care when you order books on Blender on Amazon. They are not always displayed with the right version number.
Blender Foundations: The Essential Guide to Learning Blender 2.6 by Roland Hess is one book I purchased nearly 2 years ago, started and never finished reading. Finally I decided to go back and finish it, as it’s been bugging me for a while. I have to say, this is a fine piece of text. It really takes you from knowing nothing about the software, to feeling somewhat knowledgeable on the topic.The book is not especially long at around 400 pages, but there is a good amount of information between the covers. It goes over the basics of modeling with Blender, all the important hot-keys, basic navigation, and all that. The scene you create is not super fancy, but includes a lot of good stuff: handling different materials, lighting and shadowing, glass rendering, cloth and soft-body physics, character animation, etc. Some of the basic items are created from scratch (like a table and chair) however the character model is given to you later in the book. Still not maybe *everything* you could possibly know about Blender, but it does say “Foundation†and “Essential†in the title, and I feel it lives up to the name.In terms of Blender itself, after reading the book and going through many of the exercises, I have a new-found respect for the software. Initially I expected it to be a cheap (well, free) version of Max or Maya, but I think it can stand on it’s own. While I mostly learned Maya in school, it never felt quite natural to me and I always seemed to favor 3DS Max. Since spending more time working with Blender and learning the hot-keys it seems like a really capable package. It might even like it better then the big guys. Sure, it may not have all the bells and whistles of something like Maya, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t accomplish some amazing things with the program. And, of course, it’s free and open-source which counts for a lot.Overall I liked the book and the author’s writing style and think it’s a great introduction to a powerful piece of software.

On the plus side, the book starts off strong: it provides the reader with a step-by-step guide to drawing the classic manga eyes. If the book had continued with this step-by-step approach, it would have been a very useful guide. Unfortunately, the book quickly becomes much less step-by-step.To be specific, most of the lessons involve showing the reader the starting point and, at most, an intermediate stage followed by the final (but not colored) stage. For example, the very brief section on how to draw a dragon shows the framework sketch, an intermediate stage and then the final stage with only very limited text describing what to do.The book also does not cover coloring (all drawing are black and white), scenery, and props-which makes it rather less than an ultimate tutorial.While I did learn to draw a decent eye, that was about it-the rest of the lessons were not step-by-step enough.
The pictures were quite small for a drawing guide. The author had personal methods of sketching that were good, but despite mentioning other methods, did not bother to explain them. The assumption is that the reader has some familiarity with other writing guides and that is not necessarily true for people looking to draw anime. There is very little text or instruction and with the small size of the , artwork on the Kindle screen, it is not as h helpful as it could be.Is it a manga drawing book? Yes. Does it earn the "ultimate" that is in its title? Definitely not. It is a decent secondary or tertiary resource, but this book will not be your #1 go-to guide.
I bought this book for my daughter (11) who loves manga and anime, and she wanted to learn how to draw manga characters. She likes the detailed instructions, and how the author approaches the drawing of characters. However, she didn't like that the characters are semi-realistic and not as cartoonish as her favorite manga characters are. She learned a lot on how to draw eyes, and she could develop it further to draw overly enlarged manga eye expressions. In this book, it is easier to follow how to draw bodies comparing to other manga drawing books.
this was a very good book to teach you how to draw. it may not, however, fully demonstrate the emotions, accessories, and lighting and coloring techniques commonly used in anime. this should not be the sole book of info if you really want to professionally draw anime. but is still to me a spectacular book that demonstrates all the details. bravo, MobiPoki, for a good book! please make another one about lighting and coloring techniques soon! or if you already have, please inform me what it is.
This book isn't as bad as the other reviews say it is. It's a very useful book for the absolute basics and contains all the information you will need to begin drawing at a lower price than your standard 'How to Draw Manga' books. Most of it is step by step basics such as eyes, heads, bodies, clothing folds etc and also contains tips on drawing chibis. The section on anatomy is a little vague and the book relies heavily on imagery rather than descriptions so if you're the type of person that questions a lot of techniques and want answers about why something should be done a particular way then this isn't for you.Honestly I'd say this is a better book for the absolute beginner than the Mark Crilley or Manga University books and is a much cheaper option. I personally didn't learn anything new though.
I like the very simple instructions, the only thing is that digital version when the author goes in to the detail the page looks very small so you have to enlarge it. Aside from that I think is a very nice how to book.
I got this book for my son, whom loves to draw. He has expressed to me that this book is easy to follow. Not only that, his artwork looks like it was done by a professional.
Fantastic book goes into great details and pictures you can look at to. Now that's teaching. If I can see it I can do it most of the time.

That past faiths were given to specific peoples at specific times of history and given in a way that most (not all) people could accept and understand. Since I never even heard of it, and their beliefs sounded compelling, I picked up this book to find out more about this little known faith. While I did not convert my faith; I found the book did a great job of providing a great, non-biased, overview of the faith. I learned about the roots of the faith, what their main beliefs are, and how they practice them. I found this book fascinating and this 'new' faith very interesting. Highly recommended for those that want to find out more about the Bahai faith.

Mr. Bowers clearly lays out the fundamentals of the Baha'i Faith. The Baha'i Faith is a religion whose primary function is to teach mankind to love all members of the human family as their own nuclear family. We are all created equal, all created noble in the eyes of God. Our job as global citizens is to work for the betterment of the whole human family giving everyone the opportunity to participate in its advancement. Baha'u'llah promises that by following his teachings, we will create 'heaven on earth'.
This is a very good introduction to the Baha'i faith. I was not at all familiar with the Baha'i's. I am a student (sort of) of religion and have always wanted to understand what the other faiths and traditions have to say, preferably by reading their main religious text (read as bible), but when you've never heard of a faith you don't know where to look. So, I saw this on Amazon and it was touted as an intro to the Baha'i faith. It is. It gives you the basics, basically the Baha'i 101 version, of the faith, as well as the names of the major religious texts so you can buy them and read the teachings as written.Is it preachy as Publishers Weekly states? I agree with one of the other reviewers on this. No it is not. He quotes from "scripture" as necessary to explain his point. This is a good primer to decide whether or not you want to delve deeper and understand more about the Baha'i faith.
This is a wonderful book for a beginner in the studying the Baha'i Faith. It breaks down the basic beginnings of the Faith and the laws and customs. A person who has been in the Faith for a long time, a new believer, or a seeker can equally find value in the information from this book.
I am a Baha'i of many years. I think this book is a good intro to the history of the Baha'i Faith. It's easy to read and includes all of the major historical points. I like that the author includes quotes from non-Baha'i figures of that time period. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about the beginning of the Baha'i Faith as an introduction. There are other books that go into more detail for anyone who would like to study Baha'i history in more depth. "God Passes By" by Shoghi Effendi would be a good next book for a more serious study.

This is a great book. As technical as a smart guy would want. So many books dont go in depth but this author does and im grateful for the real knowledge i gained from reading it. Recommend highly.
I was given this book to review by the YDSA, being a practising yacht surveyor in Britain. I found it to be a very poor book, written by somebody who, so far as can be seen, is not a marine surveyor but a lecturer in marine ventilation. A colleague who also reviewed the book agreed.It would be of no help, and could be misleading.
