I am getting this book for our whole Girl Scout Troop. I have a really hard time using the current Journey books. I just think they are honestly a waste. We are going to have the girls use these to figure out their Bronze, Silver and Gold Award projects. We tested them on two girls (leader daughters) and they were great.
I bought this for my sister for Christmas and she loves it! She is a future activist in the making and I can totally see her using this book to it's fullest potential. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to make a difference.
A great inspiration for developing young people's leadership skills. It opened doors for our grandchildren. A positive learning tool. Thank you
As its substitle suggests, DO SOMETHING is a feel-good, hands-on , step-by-step "handbook for young activists."The book is divided into five main sections:-- "See it" helps readers figure out where their passions ("things") are-- "Believe it" helps them flesh out why the problem is important-- "Build it" helps them figure out what to do about their issue. It has 32 off-the-shelf ideas for animal welfare, disaster relief, anti-discrimination, education, environmental, health, human rights, poverty, anti-violence, peace, and anti-homelessness, plus a section where readers can flesh out their own ideas for projects.-- "Do it" helps readers figure out the details, from the mission statement to project name to petitions.-- Finally "Reflect it" helps readers figure out what worked, what didn't, how to keep the momentum going (thank you notes!) or how to pass on the torch to someone else. The ideas presented range from the simple - volunteering, writing letters - to the complex--organizing toy drives and art exhibits. Regardless of where readers' passion takes them, this book is sure to simultaneously energize them and make sure they are practical in achieving their goals.I would recommend this book highly to tweens and teens looking to make a difference. It would also make a great resource for afterschool programs, church groups, etc. Heck, even college students and members of the community in general will find it a quick, fun, and thorough way to get their thoughts organized. My one caveat is that while the book is made to be written on, it might be better to have a separate project notebook, so the book can be used again and again.
This is a wonderful resource for any one or any group wanting to make a positive impact in their community. I am using this to help my Girl Scout troop with their silver award. It does a better job of walking you through a project than the GS materials. It starts with figuring out what your "thing" is, then finding facts (always go to 11!), suggested interview questions when talking to experts on the topic, even reminds you to send thank you notes. For those who need a little more help, it even lays out some project ideas.I found the links in the text to templates were no longer available, but the pages copy pretty easily if you don't want to write in the book.
I have an 9 year old and an 11 year old. I have always tried to make community service a part of their lives, bringing them along for church outings to soup kitchens, my trips to senior homes, and even working in our community garden. Unfortunately, it was beginning to become more of a chore than something that they wanted to take part in. But ever since I bought them this book, they realize that they can come up with their own volunteer projects that interest them, and they are really taking on the initiative themselves. I am so impressed with how this book has opened their eyes and helped walk them through the steps. Yesterday my daughter asked me if I would go with her to volunteer at the local animal shelter. It brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Do Something!
When I was younger I did volunteering here and there b/c I knew I wanted to help my community- but I never started my own major projects even though there were (and still are) issues I was definitely super passionate about. Mostly because making a major change on my own just seemed too big to do without an adult or already established org/volunteer opportunity. This book is cool b/c it breaks all that stuff down step by step, so that no matter your age you can make a difference in a real way in your OWN way. Definitely giving to my little sister as one of her Christmas presents so that she can use it to be a leader in a way I wasn't able to!
Well designed guide book for grade 5 and up. Ring-bound notebook with sections of hot, current topics for kids to choose from. The Stop Bullying and Violence Topic is great for my 5th grade child. This guide book is outstanding!
