Having read much on Joseph Smith I would say this work is the most unbiased of any single work. Thoroughly documented this book neither attacks nor glorifies Joseph Smith but transports the reader to Joseph Smtih's time and gives him the freedom to arrive at his own conclusions. Thanks Dr. Bushman.
Highly informative, well-researched and thought-provoking for those interested in this religion that grew up in the American frontier of the mid-19th century. It deals with the personality of Smith and his family influences as well as his mysticism and his amazing organizational talent. He was a remarkable individual with a passionate commitment to innovation and a huge imagination. His mistakes bring out his humanity, and his humility in the face of setbacks as well as his accomplishments in such a short period of time are quite fascinating.
I liked this objective and straight forward appraisal of an amazing and complicated man’s life. As painful as it is sometimes, God does allow us our agency and this book demonstrates the cause and effect of said agency on Joseph and his closest associates lives.
The author has presented an honest , detailed, thorough, depiction of the events, personalities, and cultural perspectives of a unique American who left a mark on history. It is told with little bias and without whitewashing, aggrandizing or vilifying and with no hidden agenda to sway opinion. Much appreciated.
Wow, the author really did his homework. You can tell that this was an historic account where A LOT of research was done and done well. I like how it's tried to provide the most accurate account possible. Sometimes, believers in Joseph Smith see everything he did only in a positive light. Those that think Joseph Smith wasn't who he says he was only see him in a negative one. This account isn't either. While the author is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he's also a respected scholar of history and as such, he doesn't use a lot of hyerbole - the facts are what they are. If you are either a member of the church or not, it will increase your appreciation for the man and give insight into his character. The book is full of facts, so if that's not for you, you might want to try something else.
I applaud Mr. Bushman for writing such a well researched book. The notes are amazing (it takes 1.5x's as long to read it because there are so many notes to reference in the back of the book) and have led to reputable sources. Many of the points and events from Joseph Smith's life that are discussed shed so much light as to how/why the early church was the way it was. Some are difficult pills to swallow for active LDS members, but are nonetheless important points to discuss. JS was not a perfect person (as I'm sure he would have admitted) and Mr. Bushman appropriately shows the virtues and vices that JS had.
Amazing book. it reads a bit more like an encyclopedia and Bushman is something of a dry, if verbose writer, but the sympathetic and objective approach throughout the material is welcome, as is the candor about the very real shortcomings of Mormonism's founder. A must-read for any Latter-day Saints or someone interested in Mormon history.
Very informative history of Joseph Smith the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormon). As far as I can tell Bushman has provided a historically accurate accounting. He does not whitewash the history like some LDS historians. This is a "warts and all" history, that shows both the positive and amazing things Joseph Smith accomplished while including a description of some of his faults and shortcomings. I highly recommend this book for people interested in LDS history.
