I could not put this book down. It is inspiring yet insanely tragic, and entirely preventable.NOTE: I grew up Seventh Day Adventist. I am saddened that the perspective of the two men on this boat is so warped from main stream SDA beliefs & teaching. Their families were part a fringe of super pious, legalistic zealots. Their experiences are nothing at all like my own. I am particularly sad for Bob. He would have flourished in my own SDA community. My childhood was filled with joy and wonder, and very happy memories of Sabbath School & church, love, warmth, and family.Jim in my opinion was a very flawed and clearly (in retrospect) mentally imbalanced individual. He exuded piousness, but was in many ways inherently evil. This entire tragedy was caused and then worsened by his very poor and deliberate decisions, and his lies. I lay awake for at least an hour after I finished this book, reviewing each portent to tragedy. First, Jim lied about his Ham operator license. Then, during the pitch of the storm, and after Bob had courageously kept them upright all night, Jim actually contacted the Coast Guard through a Ham operator patch at Bob's insistence, and then told the Coast Guard that they were not in distress and not in need of assistance. When Jim took the helm, under very clear heading instructions from Bob, he steered outside of the parameters THREE times, nearly breeching the boat twice, and then completely capsizing the third time. This within a couple of hours of taking the wheel. Did he do this on purpose? Was he intent on a survival struggle from the beginning? After the capsize, Jim seemed determine to commit act after act designed to further cripple them. Inexplicable that he jettisoned their desalinator, otherwise they would have had a continuous source of fresh water and all three would likely have survived. I know Bob must have mentally flogged himself every day for not taking control immediately of the food supply and essential items.Jim threw away licorice & cheese balls and macaroni etc that did not belong to him. If not for Jim's evil actions, all three would have survived. He was at heart a highly conflicted individual that seemed intent on causing his own destruction and that of his crew. This book really bothers me on a deep level. It will take me a few days to shake feelings of anger towards Jim. He was the instrument of their destruction. Full-out lunatic. What surprises me the most, is that Bob showed great restraint when speaking with the author, by not listing the litany of malicious things Jim did that ultimately cost Bob's wife Linda, and Jim himself, their lives. I wonder whether I would have actually killed Jim myself after Linda died. In my heart, I doubt that redemption awaits Jim. Some people are inherently evil. In the end, I felt sad for Jim's wife, children & unborn child, but I cannot conjure up any empathy for Jim himself. I feel deep empathy for Bob and his wife Linda, and their unborn child. Theirs is an incomprehensible tragedy. I wish that the author had given an update on what has become of Bob. Did he remarry? Was he ever able to put this nightmare behind him? Is he in contact with his sister (Jim's wife)? I would very much like to know the course Bob's life took. He is the ultimate survivor.I highly recommend this book.

OK I have to confess: I have just read the beginning of this book - maybe five pages. But the fact is that I already know that it's going to be wonderful. Why? Heck, based on his other work, I'd read a cereal box if it was written by Thomas Thompson. And of course the sad part is, he isn't here any longer to entertain and inform us with his literally awe-some writing. Yes, awe, which I am always in when I read his (far too few) books. The man had a wonderful gift of narrative. He will long be missed. So, off I go back to read some more of this very interesting story, and I'll come back at the end and update. And I'm back! My thoughts were spot-on. This was a fascinating story at many levels, but I'll have to say: those who think this was a 'religious story' aren't really understanding. The main takeaway, after one accounts for the fascinating story of how the three sailors got lost, and the trials and tribulations of being lost at sea, is: blind adherence to religion kills. One could even shorten it to: religion kills. And it certainly did in this instance, nearly all three of the sailors.I won't go any further with spoilers, but I would encourage you to read this story. It's very well told.

Well, Thomas Thompson was a terrific writer, so of course I had to read this. I fully expected the extreme fundamentalist in this book would no doubt claim to know the mind of God and the Bible better than anyone else...and I was not disappointed. This set the stage for the tragedy and indeed hastened it. Nevertheless, it was shocking, tragic, and so infuriating. The book was terrific, so well written, so engaging. While none of us knows how we would respond to being adrift at sea for weeks, we can only hope we are not adrift with a religious fanatic who jeopardizes our lives and his own, insisting we must let God save us rather than do anything to try to save ourselves, lest we take credit for saving ourselves. It reminded me of the sad joke where a man's house is in a flood. He climbs on the roof and prays for God to save him. Someone comes buy with a boat and tries to rescue the man but he says no, God will save me. A helicopter comes by and offers to rescue him, and the man says no, God will save me! The waters rise and the man drowns. When he gets to Heaven he asks God, “Why didn't you save me?” God replies, “what are you talking about, I sent a boat and a helicopter!” This book will keep you thinking about it long after the last page.

Great read about a man who built his own boat which wouldn't sink! It was reckless to lie about having radio communication to the outside world but we all make mistakes but it does all seem preventable with him calling the coast guard and maybe kinda sorta asking for help.don't put others at risk or be afraid to ask for help! It is a great read...Thompson is a great writer...I love this writing style...anything Thomas Thompson wrote is probably solid gold.

Interesting read on survival. The religious battle between the survivors was an excellent study in extreme zealot behavior. Highly recommend.

More about faith than open sea survival. Captain attempts a Pacific coastwise passage on home made trimaran without proper long range radio equipment. Religious dogma plays out on capsized Yacht during seventy plus days on capsized hull.

I remembered reading this years ago but still had to read it again. Such an ordeal that they went through and how they survived as long as they did was amazing beyond belief although two did die in this tragic event

Anyone that has spent time on the ocean; can relate to the joys of being alive and dependent on one's skills. Finding ways to overcome unexpected circumstances and reveling in the joys of completing a voyage.
